FAQs
1. What colors are available? Red, Amber (Yellow), Orange, Blue, Green, White and Teal are standard colors. Custom colors can be matched by wavelength and some colors, such as purple and pink, can be achieved by blends. Lektron is also introducing new RGB LED products soon that are capable of producing millions of colors along with color changing special effects. For more information about Lektron RGB products please contact us directly. 2. Are all colors the same price? Because Red, Amber (Yellow) and Orange LEDs have been available for a much longer time period, their cost is slightly less than that of Green, Blue and White. Green, Blue and White LEDs are slightly more expensive to produce than Red, Amber (Yellow) and Orange, and are correspondingly, slightly more expensive to buy. The price of Green, Blue and White LEDs is dropping each year even as the LEDs continue to get brighter. 3. Are LEDs as bright as fluorescent and neon? The light from an LED is directional, unlike conventional light sources such as incandescent, halogen or fluorescent, which emit light in all directions. Because of its directional nature, LEDs can appear almost twice as bright as typical light sources. This is especially beneficial to customers who wish their business to stand out even in bright sunlight because LEDs such as LEKTRON’s Laser Strip System are visible and “punchy” even during bright, daytime hours. An additional benefit of LEDs is that they offer excellent performance at extremely low temperatures, thus eliminating the cold start and dimness problem typically associated with fluorescent and neon systems. 4. Should I be concerned about weather damage? LEKTRON uses durable, high impact plastics that are UV resistant. Our LED systems are engineered with the challenges of temperature and weather specifically in mind. Lektron has reference-able production systems in areas as diverse as the cold of Alaska, the humidity of Florida and the heat of the desert southwest. Our systems are proven performers and if you’d like, we’ll be glad to put you in touch with one of our customers who can speak directly to your own weather/temperature situation, be it heat, cold, humidity, salt water, extreme moisture, or other. 5. How long do LEDs last? Red, Amber and Orange LEDs have a typical burn life of up to 100,000 hours (or approximately 10 ` 11 years of constant use). Blue, Green and White LEDs have life in the range of up to 50,000 hours. The usable burn life of an LED is measured as 70% of its original rated intensity. This means, LEDs will not suddenly fail, leaving dark spots like fluorescent and neon.6. What is a typical lead-time for product delivery? Lead-time for existing designs is typically 1 – 3 weeks. Lighted sign orders can take up to 8 weeks depending on the order queue and the complexity of the design. Custom orders containing animated drivers, RGB boards and specialty lighting applications can vary depending on complexity of design and engineering.7. How does the cost of using LEDs compare to fluorescent and neon? Cost for a LEKTRON lighting system is competitive with existing technology. Over time, customers will achieve significantly reduced energy and maintenance costs. 8. What does the LEKTRON lighting system include? A typical LEKTRON sign lighting system includes the LED system, a power supply/transformer, mounting brackets, as many coupling rain shields and or corner joints as needed, and installation instructions. LEKTRON also provides on-site installation services throughout all 50 states by our professionally trained installation crews, if needed.9. Can LEKTRON help design a lighting system? LEKTRON has been designing LED lighting systems for over 10 years. LEKTRON has expertise in LED illumination, circuit board design, track design and fabrication, and power optimization. Some of our custom orders have included animated linear lighting and signage, curved installations, lens modifications and backlit displays. Whatever your needs, LEKTRON will bring technical innovation, engineering creativity and expertise, and a fresh perspective to your LED illumination project.10. How are LEKTRON systems powered? LEKTRON sign lighting systems operate at low voltage (12 to 24 volts). The power supply takes standard line voltage and converts it to the low voltage required for the LED system. The benefit of this approach is that low voltage reduces safety and fire hazards. 11. Can LEDs be retrofitted into existing lighting systems? Yes, in many cases LEKTRON systems will fit into existing applications.12. Is installation difficult? LEKTRON products are designed for easy installation. Our systems mount using standard tools and each order is shipped with detailed, easy to follow instructions. In addition, we have trained staff available during normal business hours who can respond to installation questions via phone, fax or email. Wiring of the power supply/transformer should be done by a qualified electrician. LEKTRON can also provide on-site installation services throughout all 50 states by our professionally trained, bonded and insured installation crews, if needed.13. What lengths do LEKTRON Leon and Laser Strip come in? Standard lengths of Leon and Laser Strip are 8’. All standard lengths are field adjustable in 3” increments, allowing the installer to field trim the system without exact measurements. Each 8’ run of Leon or Laser Strip can be joined with water resistant connectors to achieve a typical run length of up to 32 feet per transformer. Multiple runs can be linked together to attain almost any length.
